5 Tiny Habits That Changed My Sleep (Without a Morning Routine)

I used to wear “tired” like a badge of honor. Up before dawn, chugging coffee just to function, crashing so hard by 9 PM that I couldn’t remember my head hitting the pillow.

For years, I thought the answer was a rigid morning routine. Wake at 5, cold plunge, journal, meditate — all before sunrise. I tried it. Lasted three days. Who has time for that when you’re juggling a career, family, and the constant ping of notifications?

Here’s what I discovered by accident: you don’t need a morning routine to sleep well. You just need a few tiny evening habits that set the stage for deep rest.

1. The 10-Minute Wind-Down Buffer

I used to go from work emails straight to staring at the ceiling. Now I set a gentle alarm 10 minutes before bed — and do nothing productive. No screens, no to-do lists. I just sit, breathe, and let my brain coast to a stop. Too simple? It changed everything.

2. A Cooler Room, A Deeper Sleep

Your core temperature needs to drop for deep sleep. I turned my thermostat down a few degrees, and suddenly I wasn’t waking at 3 AM tossing off covers. It’s tiny, free, and works immediately.

3. One Page Before Bed

Instead of scrolling social media, I read exactly one page of a physical book. Not a chapter — one page. Nine times out of ten, I’m asleep within minutes. It’s non-negotiable but non-intimidating. Anyone can read one page.

4. No Phones in the Bedroom

This was the hardest habit and the most impactful. I bought a $10 alarm clock and charged my phone in the kitchen. No late-night doomscrolling. Just my pillow and me.

5. A 2-Minute Gratitude Check

While lying there, I think of two things I’m grateful for from that day. It shifts my brain from problem-solving mode (keeps you awake) to contentment mode (puts you to sleep). Feels cheesy. Works anyway.

I won’t pretend I sleep perfectly every night. But these five habits took me from dreading bedtime to looking forward to it. No morning routine required.

If you’re ready to stop fighting with your sleep, I put together a free guide with more of my favorite sleep strategies — no cold plunges, no 5 AM alarms, just simple shifts that fit a busy life.
